AI and Foundation Models for Automated Game Testing and Evaluation

How intelligent agents explore games, verify mechanics, discover defects, judge quality, and produce evidence grounded in player behavior.

Direct answer

What are automated game testing and AI playtesting?

Automated game testing uses intelligent agents and learned evaluators to explore game behavior, exercise mechanics, identify failures, and assess player-facing quality. Agents may act from pixels, GUI elements, structured state, or engine APIs while pursuing coverage, novelty, progress, or a targeted test objective.

AI playtesting must address both exploration and judgment. Reaching an unusual state does not show that a system can recognize a defect, while a strong test oracle cannot help if relevant states are never visited. Verification therefore combines action generation with executable assertions, state invariants, regression selection, crash signals, visual checks, or model-based judges. Foundation models can interpret requirements, generate tests, summarize traces, and judge open-ended behavior, but their verdicts need calibration and comparison with trusted evidence.

Testing also needs human relevance. Procedural personas or diverse agents may broaden behavior, yet diversity alone does not establish that they represent real players. Evaluation should report validated defects, behavioral or state coverage, verdict accuracy, reproduction cost, false positives, held-out defect families, and performance under realistic time and interaction budgets. These measures distinguish useful testing systems from agents that merely produce long or varied traces.

Research scope

What this topic covers

01

Automated playtesting

Exploration agents, procedural personas, objective design, coverage, and behavior generation.

02

Verification and defect detection

Executable oracles, mechanic checks, regression tests, trace diagnosis, and reproduction.

03

Model judges and player relevance

Learned verdicts, benchmark agreement, meta-evaluation, human likeness, and population coverage.

Evidence

What should evaluation establish?

Testing evidence should connect exploration to independently validated outcomes. Strong studies use held-out defects, calibrated oracles, relevant player samples, and reproducible traces while reporting the cost and false positives of each discovered issue.

  • Validated defects and state coverage
  • Oracle or verdict accuracy
  • Reproduction time and test cost
  • Held-out defects and player relevance
